Manual sampling

A blood sample for genetic research in dogs and cats should be removed by a veterinarian.

The procedure of drawing blood to perform genetic studies:

  • Use a sterile needle for each animal.
  • Collect 0.5 – 1.0 ml nieskrzepniętej of blood in tube containing EDTA (purple top).
  • Gently mix several times inverting the tube to mix the anticoagulant and blood. Do not send skoagulowanej blood, because it is suitable for further analysis.
  • Clearly label the tube (animal's name or sign, name of owner and date of sampling).
  • Store sample in refrigerator ( 4 ° C – do NOT FREEZE SAMPLES!). Send sample as fast as possible.
  • The sample needs to be send together with the order form of participation of the veterinarian in the appropriate envelope, which prevents damage to the tablets in tubes, jars during transport.

The preparation of the samples before downloading

  • Animal you are about to download the genetic material for research should not eat at least 1 hour before loading samples. This is important because it reduces the risk of contamination of the sample.
  • The animal should be isolated from other animals, toys or other potential sources of contamination of the oral cavity, at least a few hours (recommended at least one day) before sample loading. This prevents the deterioration contamination of the sample with biological material from other animals.
  • Before loading the sample, check the mouth of the animal for the presence of food particles or other foreign elements. If present, remove impurities, rinsing them thoroughly, then wait at least 1 hour.
  • The person performing the sampling should avoid contact with the pit in the oral cavity of the animal. The use of latex gloves reduces the risk of contamination.
  • If samples are taken from more than one animal, the person sampling must wash their hands before each new sampling, or if removed, the sample was removed using gloves, replace them with a new pair.
  • Don't let a brush come in contact with any other surface than the mucous membrane of the oral cavity of the animal from which you are downloading genetic material. If you make more than one sample, be careful not to come into contact with material originating from other animal material, or originating from its samples.
  • Prepare a clean surface where you can put the vial in position for taking a smear after sampling.

How is the selection?

  • Use two wymazówek for download of genetic material for each animal.

Important information: EVG Laboratory analysis of swabs from the cheeks, because this method is less invasive. There are, however, some disadvantages of this method, you should be aware of before sending swab samples from the cheek:

  • Sample contamination: this is the most important factor that affects the final result of the test. DNA tests conducted in our lab is extremely sensitive and capable of detecting even a minimal amount of DNA, which may originate from the source of contamination (human or animal), thus causing incorrect results. Therefore, it is essential that during sampling it was taken into account, and pollution prevention is the highest priority during sampling and shipping.
  • Insufficient amount of DNA: it is Possible that during sampling, insufficient number of cells will be collected from cheek mucosa. Insufficient number of cells will lead to those amounts of DNA, which can lead to reduce the reliability of the results. In most cases this is due to the inaccuracy during sampling

Sampling of material from his cheek in puppies younger than 8 weeks (before groove) is not recommended because of the possibility of cross-contamination of the samples of the mother and/or puppies from the same litter. In case you download the sample from the smear from the oral cavity of such animals, the risk of erroneous results is the sole responsibility of the client. We would definitely recommend to send blood samples from animals that were still fed through the mother.
